So about a year ago I went out and toured Congaree & Penn Farm and had a blast. It was great seeing the birth of food and where it all starts. Congaree & Penn's major product is rice. But they also deal with Mayhaw seedlings, making Shrub and are now also dabbling in honey bees. So much exciting things are coming out of this farm. It was a great honor when they asked me back again. They've held many events in the past couple of months, but with my work schedule I haven't had a chance to attend any. So I definitely took them up on their offer and was so damn glad I did. I packed up my two boys & my cameras and took the short trip out to the farm. It was beautiful day.
It was good seeing how much the farm has grown. As you can see in the pictures, the place is beautiful.
Scott Meyer, the farmer, is crazy smart and is definitely one of the hardest working people I know. I watched him as he showed & described to me the process called "grafting". Grafting is a technique in which a section of a stem is inserted into the stock of a tree/plant. Seems easy?? Maybe, but Scott makes it looks so. He knocks out a whole row in minutes. I also got to meet, Lula & SeaBiscuit. They are great farm guides and are definitely some hard workers too. They are some of the nicest dogs.
It's a great farm, run by some great folk. They are smart, hardworking and looking into better ways of growing the product healthy and having little waste. Make sure to catch Congaree & Penn at farmers markets & events around town. You can purchase products like their Grits, Middlins & Shrub. It's best to follow them on Instagram: @congareefarm or Facebook.
